Three months and two days before his dëmise, Nigeria's President Sani Abacha was in Freetown, Sierra Leone and received a heroic welcome.
Why?
He helped the country reinstate democracy by ensuring the return of Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, the democratic leader of the country who was removed by the country's mïlïãry and was in ēxïle for over nine months.
Ironically, Abacha was himself a mïlītàry leader of Nigeria and was planning by all means to become a democratic President. Five political parties in Nigeria at that time had endorsed him as the sole candidate.
Kabbah made a jubilant return home on March 10, 1998. Kabbah's return marked the restoration of democracy in Sierra Leone.
This photo taken by Issouf Sanogo for AFP shows Abacha waving at the citizens of Sierra Leone as they hailed him.
