Police Arrests Enugu Council Chairman for Fighting Back Against Killer Herdsmen

The Enugu State Police Command has reportedly summoned the Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Mr. Chijioke Ezugwu, over his decision to deploy a local vigilante group to combat a wave of deadly attacks linked to suspected herdsmen in the area. The move has sparked outrage among locals and raised fresh questions about the government’s response to escalating insecurity in rural communities.

According to multiple security sources, Chairman Ezugwu has been invited twice to the Enugu State Police Command headquarters by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations. The DCP, said to be of northern origin, allegedly grilled the council chairman over accusations that his vigilante group had been targeting and killing herdsmen during their forest patrols.

But many see this police action as a ploy to halt the chairman's grassroots efforts to reclaim his community from criminals. Sources familiar with the case claim the security operatives were more interested in silencing Ezugwu than addressing the violence plaguing his council area.

“They wanted him to write a statement under caution, as if he’s a criminal,” a source close to the matter told SaharaReporters. “But the chairman, who has a legal background, refused. He reminded them that he has a constitutional duty to protect his people when the state fails to do so.”

Ezugwu reportedly defended the formation and activities of the local security outfit, insisting it was a last resort born out of the government's failure to curb recurring attacks, kidnappings, and destruction of farmlands.

"You know the dire situation in my area. We’ve lost too many lives. My people can’t go to their farms. We had to be armed to go into the forests and secure our communities,” Ezugwu was quoted as saying during one of the meetings.
