*Advocate for Social Justice and Development Holds Second Children/Youths Parliament Session in Kono District*
The Advocate for Social Justice and Development (ASJD) has successfully concluded the first Republic of the Second Session of the Children/Youths Parliament in Kono District. The session forms part of ASJD's Emerging Governance Issues initiative project, which seeks to promote quality service delivery and strengthen accountability among public institutions in the district.
Speaking at the opening of the session, the Executive Director of ASJD, Arthur Kargbo, described the Children/Youths Parliament as an open dialogue platform that brings together Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and young parliamentarians to discuss governance challenges affecting the people of Kono. He explained that the objective is to encourage constructive engagement and identify practical solutions that will improve service delivery.
Mr. Kargbo emphasized that the forum is not intended to criticize or embarrass government institutions but rather to create an opportunity for MDAs to engage directly with local youth parliamentarians on key development issues affecting the district.
The session was attended by the Mayor of the Koidu New Sembehun City Council, representatives from the Kono District Council, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, among other stakeholders.
During the discussions, participants acknowledged that although the various institutions are making significant efforts to fulfil their mandates, timely service delivery remains a major challenge. Representatives from the different sectors attributed these challenges largely to inadequate funding and delays in the release of government allocations.
Addressing the session, the Mayor of the Koidu New Sembehun City Council, Komba Matthew Sam, stated that the council continues to collaborate with all relevant sectors to ensure effective implementation of its responsibilities. However, he noted that full decentralisation remains a major challenge across the country. He encouraged the Children/Youths Parliamentarians to work closely with the council and other development partners to advance advocacy efforts aimed at promoting sustainable development in Kono District.
Also speaking during the session, the newly appointed Speaker of the Children/Youths Parliament, Tamba Steven Ngaujah, expressed appreciation to ASJD for the confidence reposed in the young people of Kono. He pledged that members of the Children/Youths Parliament would continue to engage MDAs and development partners to advocate for improved and tangible service delivery for the benefit of the people of the district.
The session concluded with a renewed commitment from both public institutions and youth representatives to strengthen collaboration, enhance accountability, and promote inclusive governance for sustainable development in Kono District.
